The Viewlex company pioneered planetarium automation technology beginning in the late 60's using a synchronized tape method devised for the Goto projector
Viewlex Apollo III
Built by Goto (E-5), some sold under the name "Viewlex Apollo III" and some others "Observa-Dome" (Steve Pielock). 10 inch (for 16 ft dome) or 17 inch starball (24 ft dome).
